Brandon Smith Lab Experiment #8 Summary Our objective is this experiment was to determine the heat of reaction in three different reactions. The first reaction was simply adding hot water, 90 degrees Celsius, to room temperature water. The second reaction was magnesium metal and distilled water. The third reaction was magnesium oxide powder and distilled water. We started the experiment by obtaining two Styrofoam cups and putting one inside the other forming our Calorimeter. We took the weight of the Calorimeter before we added any distilled water, and then added 40 mL of distilled water. We heated 50 mL of distilled water to about 90 degrees Celsius, then added it to the room temperature water to see how the temperature would change. We repeated the procedure 2 more times, except instead of using hot water, we added magnesium metal or magnesium oxide powder to HCl to see any change in temperature. Results
