Brandon Smith Chem 107-533 April 3, 2008 Experiment #7: Summary: The purpose of this experiment was to examine the evaporation of various liquids. The main objective was to learn how the strength of the intermolecular forces varies within molecular size and structure. For the first part of the experiment, two temperature probes were wrapped in filter paper. One was immersed in Ethanol and the other in Propanol. The temperature was monitored with the computer for 15 seconds to establish an initial temperature of each liquid, after they were in the liquids for at least 45 seconds. The probes were then removed and the temperature was observed until the temperatures reached minimums and began to increase. The change in temperature during evaporation was then determined. The procedure was repeated using Butanol and n-Pentane. For the last set we used Methanol and n-Hexane. For the second part of the experiment, Methanol was introduced to an Erlenmeyer flask through the valve system without letting any air out. The flask was then put into a water baths of four temperatures one in the range of 35-30, 25-20, 15-10, and 5-0 degrees Celsius. The temperatures were lowered
