Brandon Smith Chem 107-522 2/7/08 Summary The procedure of this experiment was fairly simple. We found the mass of a clean beaker, and then used a pipette to add 5 ml of water until we had 25 ml, reweighing the beaker after each 5 ml addition of water. We later used these results to find the average volume of the pipette. We then repeated the process using acetone. With these results combined with the average volume of the pipette we calculated from the first part, we were able to calculate the density of acetone in grams per milliliter. We were able to see from these experiments that mass and volume are conserved. For the next part of the experiment we found the mass of a graduated cylinder and again added 5 ml of water, reading both the volume and mass to see if it was conserved. In the last part of the experiment, we used our pipette to add 5 ml of water and 5 ml of acetone to see if mass and volume were conserved in the mixture of liquids. As expected, it was. Discussion
