Jin Bae CHEM-241L Extraction Performed: 9/28/2006 Written: 10/4/2006 Purpose The purpose of this lab was to learn the techniques of extraction associated with distribution of solute in two immiscible solvents and the theories behind it. Using extraction to isolate components in solution and figure out organic compounds using melting points. In part one, 5mL of basic aqueous 2, 6-dichloroindophenol was added with 5ml of chloroform in a test tube and separation of layers were observed and recorded. Then, 2mL of HCl was added gently onto the top layer and stirred vigorously. Then, 5mL of NaOH was additionally added to the top layer and stirred gently. The test tube was then shaken vigorously to induce thorough mixture. Observations of appearances of layers were recorded before and after every addition. In part two, an unknown mixture in ether was obtained. The original ether
