STATE #1 The State of States Sovereign state o Antarctica is not sovereign, it is still disputed o US oldest sovereign states, China, Iran, European countries are early ones as well o Most of planet falls into younger category Africa, USSR 50 or 60 years old, or much younger o Early days, people associate themselves with other people, not a territory Elected sovereign ruler of the PEOPLE, not the place (King, monarch, emperor) Chinese Emperor of the PEOPLE o Nation Group of people who share a common culture Unlimited number of nations Cherokee, Aztec, Zuuluu, Scots, Persians, Mongolian, Curds, French, Germans, Japanese, Koreans o Nation state People who share a common culture and rule themselves in a defined political area Germany, France, All of Europe, Dutch, Italians, Spaniards, Iran, China, Japan(99%), Korea (best example) 100% ethnically culturally Korean people Is every state a nation-state? Not really , are some entities like US, India, Sudan (north is Arabic, south is black African Christians), US is considered by some to be nation-state o Does have common culture, based on ideas o Personal freedoms and free market capitalism Usually have ongoing wars Are there nations without states? YES, like Basque of northern Spain, or curds in Turkey, Syria, Northern Iraq, Iran… Palestine, or Kosovars in Kosovo Why not let these place become own state
