Jin Bae PHIL 100 Tanksley Stephen P. Stich The dangers as well as the benefits of researching in the area of recombinant DNA technology has been a subject of much debate and focus, both inside and outside of the biological community. Stephen P. Stich states in his essay, “The Recombinant DNA Debate,” that it is absolutely immoral to do research in an area considered to obtain even the smallest possibility of causing catastrophic results. He insists that there should be a total ban on recombinant DNA research (Stich, 11). Nonetheless, Stich’s argument is particularly interesting in the aspect that he notes that the problem with the “doomsday scenario” is exactly the same problem which resides within the argument made by Blaise Pascal’s on theism. Pascal claims that it is highly rational to believe in God because there is a possibility that God exists, and God will punish those that do not believe in him as their savior. He is concluding that there is no reason to risk a life in eternal damnation after death, when just believing in God would guarantee an entrance into heaven. Pascal argues that it is like an insurance to believe that God is the mighty savior of all souls. The problems that lie within these arguments is that there is also a non-zero possibility that God exists and throws to hell those who do believe in him, so, speaking about miniscule possibilities
