I. INTRODUCTION
The special senses are important that are made up of very complex receptor apparatus in
order to respond properly to specific stimulus.

9.01A. Define sensation. Our sensory receptors provide us with
information about the physical world,
which we call sensation. Sensory
receptors are neurons with specialized
functions that respond to specific stimuli.
Sensation occurs when sensory
information is detected by a sensory
receptor. Vision, hearing or audition,
smell or olfaction, taste or gustation, and
touch or also known as somatosensation
are the five senses we have However, we
have sensory systems that offer
information about balance or equilibrium
or also known as vestibular sense, bodily
position and movement or the
proprioception and kinesthesia, pain or
nociception, and temperature or the
thermoception. An absolute threshold can
be used to indicate the sensitivity of a
sensory system to the relevant inputs. The
absolute threshold is the amount of
stimulus energy that must be present in
order for the stimulus to be detected 50%
of the time.
9.01B. Distinguish between general senses and
special senses.
There are two different groups of senses,
we have the general senses and special
senses. The general senses are senses
which contain receptors that are found

over a large portion of the body. These
senses are further divided into two
groups, the somatic senses and the
visceral senses. On the other hand, special
senses are those senses that are more
specialized with its structure and it is
inclined to the specific part of our body.
Some of the special senses in our body are
the olfaction and tase.
