Chapter 1 DQ 4,9,17 1. Management is the process of getting activities completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people. Efficiently is about doing things the right way. It involves eliminating waste and optimizing process. Effectiveness is about doing the right things. A good management is a blend of both efficiency and effectiveness. There is no point in acting efficiently if what you are doing will not have the desired effect. Management is different from leadership but just as important. Management also means to understand the basic tasks of all the organization. Another good management is working through others to accomplish tasks that help fulfill organizational objectives as efficiently as possible. 2. For managers to be successful, managers need to perform four managerial functions; which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Planning is determined organizational goals and a mean for achieving them. Planning is one of the best ways to improve performance. But most importantly, companies that plan have longer profits and faster growth than companies that don’t plan. Organizing is deciding where decisions will be made, who will do what jobs and tasks, and who will work for whom in the company. Leading involves inspiring and motivating workers to work hard to achieve organizational goals. The last functions of management, controlling, is monitoring progress toward goal achievement and then taking corrective action when progress isn’t being made.
