Enhancement Assignment Guidelines Fall 2008, Sections 121 and 122 Due date Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 in discussion section (topic proposal due October 15 – one paragraph description of your idea) (first draft/outline due November 5 – approximately 1 page) Weight 20 points (8% of you total lab/discussion grade) Type Individual report Length 3-4 double-spaced pages, but not more than 1000 words (references included) A topic proposal , 1 paragraph in length with an outline of your topic, will be due on Wednesday, October 15 in class (beginning of discussion). This is very important, it gives you sufficient time to come up with something else if we feel your initial topic is inappropriate. A rough draft/outline is due Wednesday, November 5 in class (beginning of discussion), you may choose whether to give us a 1 page outline or a longer rough draft for us to review. Rough drafts for our comments will not be accepted after this date. The final paper is due Wednesday, November 19 in class (beginning of discussion). Please don’t hesitate to ask us if you are not sure about which topic to write, and we can talk about your ideas during discussion, office hours or by appointment. ______________________________________________________________ Enhancement Assignment: Option 1 This assignment is your opportunity to use the knowledge you are gaining from this class to study the effects of climate change on either a plant or an animal. Climate change is leading to significant changes in temperature and rainfall regimes in California and around the world. As a result, many plants and animals will no longer be able to survive in areas where they were traditionally found. For example, a very recent study by David Ackerly, a UC Berkeley Professor (http://ib.berkeley.edu/labs/ackerly) suggested that more than half of native California plants will experience reductions of 80% in their range within the next century. Similarly, many studies have demonstrated that climate change will negatively impact many animals. Hopefully, we will be able to adopt measures that mitigate the effects of climate change, but since some governments around the world are failing to act, we need to take measures to conserve biodiversity. Your task in this assignment is to pick a species of a plant or an animal that studies have predicted will be affected in a significant way by climate change either in California or other parts of the world. In your write-up you have to describe main aspects of the biology and ecology of this species and why it is important to conserve it, in other words why should we care? For example some plants may be used for medicinal purposes, or may have an important role in their ecological community as keystone species (you will learn
