In coupled rxns Δ G’s are additive. Know relationship between Δ G’ ° and K’eq; and between Δ G and Δ G’ ° . NADH = 3 ATP’s; FADH 2 = 2 ATP’s; GTP = 1 ATP Know structures of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and NAD (nicotinamide adenosine dinucleotide) High energy bonds - Acetyl CoA (thioester bond); ATP (phosphoric anhydride bond) Energy Charge of Cell = [ATP+1/2ADP]/[ATP+ADP+AMP]; usual range in cells 0.8- 0.95 Glycolysis Function: Break down glucose to pyruvate to provide energy (ATP) for the cell and carbon skeleton for many carbon-containing compounds Location: cytosol Net Rxn: Gluc + 2NAD + + 2ADP + 2Pi 2Pyr + 2NADH + 2H + + 2ATP + 2H 2 O. Know Preparatory Phase and Payoff Phase in glycolysis Control points: Hexokinase, Phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1), Pyruvate kinase (note that all of these points have large negative free energy changes). “Substrate-level phosphorylation”: 1,3 BPG 3 PG; PEP Pyr. Large Δ G’ ° s. Know the enzymes involved when ATP is formed! Coupled rxn: F-1,6-bisP G-3-P + DHAP and the next 2 rxn’s (Know the enzymes). High energy compounds: 1) PEP; 2) 1,3 BPG; 3) ATP How many net ATPs are generated from one mol of glucose during glycolysis? How is NAD + regenerated? Why is this necessary? anaerobic: Lactate DH; Alcohol DH aerobic: Electron Transport System Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex (PDH) Function: Convert pyruvate to acetyl CoA, CO 2 , and NADH via oxidative decarboxylation reactions (links glycolysis and TCA cycle). Location: Mitochondrial matrix.
