DiscussionMy unknown was number 6, and what I believe to be BaCl.I believe that barium is the cation of my unknown solid because of three main tests.The first of the three tests is the flame test, and I believe that the flame test was the mostinformative test for choosing the cation. In the flame test, the solution burned a mainlygreen flame that contained hints of yellow, and this description matches what is given inthe table 1-5². In order to be completely confident with my flame test results, I redid theexact procedure, but this time used a known sample of barium and found that the flamesproduced looked almost identical. The next test that reassured my belief was the sulfuricacid test. Since sulfate is only insoluble with a few cations, the two most relevant to mebeing barium and calcium, I knew the result would help prove my belief. The test cameback with a precipitate that would confirm that the cation is either barium or calcium;
