Discussion
My unknown was number 6, and what I believe to be BaCl ₂ .
I believe that barium is the cation of my unknown solid because of three main tests.
The first of the three tests is the flame test, and I believe that the flame test was the most
informative test for choosing the cation. In the flame test, the solution burned a mainly
green flame that contained hints of yellow, and this description matches what is given in
the table 1-5². In order to be completely confident with my flame test results, I redid the
exact procedure, but this time used a known sample of barium and found that the flames
produced looked almost identical. The next test that reassured my belief was the sulfuric
acid test. Since sulfate is only insoluble with a few cations, the two most relevant to me
being barium and calcium, I knew the result would help prove my belief. The test came
back with a precipitate that would confirm that the cation is either barium or calcium;
