Tiffany Liu Professor Cruz History 10-2:15PM-3:35PM 31 May 2013 History 10: Final Terms/Concepts-Part 2 Landsmanshafts was a benefit society, or hometown society of Jewish immigrants from New York City’s Lower East Side. It was formed around the 1890s and composed of people from the same town or district in Russia, seeking the company of friends from the old home village. They also found community and conversation in the public bathhouses as well as in the neighborhood delicatessens and candy stores that had become gathering places. (Takaki ch. 11 page 269 and page 270) Porfiriato Regime was the period of Porfirio Diaz’s rule from 1876 to 1911 in Mexico. Diaz was the dictator of Mexico for 34 years. He managed to form a rebellion through planning in the 1870s called the Plan de Tuxtepec. Supported by the military, caudillos, liberals, indigenous peoples, and mestizos; his administration managed to undercut much of the corruption that Lerdo de Tejada's, the preceeding leader, government had created throughout the country.
