Professor Cobb English 104-03 25-Sept. 2007 The story Happy Endings is one of the most intriguing I’ve ever been instructed to read in a class. It is unique, honest, and expresses the author’s (Margaret Atwood) feelings regarding life and what our purpose is. Even more interesting, it goes on to explain how a story is written. It says that the beginning and ending are the easiest parts of the story; it’s everything in between that’s the challenge. The “hows, whats, and whys” of a story. Most of all, it shows the importance of looking at a story from every possible angle. My initial response to this work was that of intrigue. I was surprised by the boldness and the blatancy of the author. I’ve never read profanity in a story assigned by a teacher, so that was a further surprise. Initially, I was very interested in the piece on several levels. One was from a reader’s perspective. I was surprised by the cynical tone that the author took. However, as a reader, I was drawn ever deeper into the story. Another feature that caught my attention, as a reader, was the unique was in which the story was composed. As opposed to the generic “this happened and than this happened” format, this work divided each aspect of the story into its own category. Not only were the categories divided, but they were also compared and referred to throughout the other
