World War I (continued) 1. Other foreign policy changes a. GB signs Peace treaty with Germany getting Russia out of war b. US sends troops into Russia i. Sends aid to other countries harmed by war ii. Want to get their economies online because of their markets 2. Leading the peace a. Wilson’s vision i. New World Order (14 Points) – 3 overall goals 1. Countries should be able to determine their own government 2. Free trade – countries should be able to trade freely with everyone; no boundaries 3. Wants to create the League of Nations a. Governmental body where all countries have a representative b. Prevent wars from happening c. All members sign an agreement that if one member is attacked all members are attacked and their troops are put under the league of nations command b. Wilson at Paris Peace Conference (1919) i. Sits down to negotiate with GB and France ii. Runs into opposition with his ideals because theirs are entirely different iii. Their sacrifice in the war had been greater and had lost more than the U.S. 1. Main Goals: a. Make sure Germany can never wage war again

b. Germany pays massive reparations and pays for cost of war incurred by GB and France c. Want to take a part of Germany to create a buffer zone between them and the rest of Europe d. War of Guilt Clause – Germany is the cause of the war iv. Wilson doesn’t agree with these he feels that a healthy German economy is crucial 1. Believes that league of nations would prevent Germany from creating issues in Europe v. Results: 1. German reparations 2. German signs Guilt Clause 3. Small part of Germany is taken as bugger zone 4. League of Nations implemented vi. Wilson’s Results: 1. Wilson wins Nobel Peace Prize for his accomplishments in Versailles 2. 2/3 of senate is needed to ratify treaty a. Brings Versailles Treaty back to present it to senate b. Democrats are on his side because that is his affiliated political party c. Republicans are split: i. Reservationists – have concerns about treaty and want changes before they’ll sign 1. Wilson is their enemy and didn’t take any members of republican party with him to Versailles 2. Object to placing U.S. troops under control of League Of Nations ii. Irreconcilables
