1. Using your existing knowledge and on-line encyclopedia entries, define the following terms a. Natural selection i. The process where organisms with traits that enable them to adapt to environmental pressures will tend to survive and reproduce in greater numbers thus ensuring the continuation of these traits in future generations. b. Evolution i. The change in genetic composition of a population over generations due to mutations, natural selection and genetic drift. c. Creationism i. The belief that all things where created by an all powerful god. d. Intelligent Design i. The belief that all things in the universe were created by an intelligent being rather than by natural processes. e. Irreducible Complexity i. Belief that some biological systems are too complex to have evolved from simpler ancestors by chance. f. Is evolution best described as a law, a theory, a hypothesis, or a paradigm? Explain and justify your choice i. Theory, because evolution is a based on a model that explains all available data and observations. g. Describe one example of a scientific observation that cannot be explained well by our present understanding of evolution i.
