Three factors that motivated Cousteau: 1. Cousteau wanted to be free from the constraints of gravity. 2. He wanted to dive deeper and stay underwater longer. 3. Cousteau wanted to pursue underwater photography. The invention of the “Aqualung” by Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan in 1943 completely revolutionized free diving and the perception of the upper oceans. What were three unique features of the “Aqualung” and what restrictions of earlier diving apparatus did they overcome? 1. The aqualung was not restricted by a helmet or hoses; this allowed divers to move more freely. 2. Regulator fed air automatically and equalized external pressure. Replaced hand valve which was unreliable because it was difficult to match ambient pressure. 3. Used mixture of gases instead of pure oxygen which would result in convulsions. Provide the name, symptoms and causes of two diving-related illness caused by nitrogen gas that a diver may have experienced on the following dive. 1.
