CE222 Highway Engineering Notes for Chapter 13 Surveys, Plans, and Estimates Surveys: Roles of surveys: For the development of project plans and the estimation of costs Methods: Conventional ground survey Remote sensing surveys: Side-look radar Infrared photography Multi-spectral devices Aerial photography Highway Location Selection Involves extensive survey activities, part of MIS project (Major Investment Study, any large projects must go through MIS) Selection procedures: Step 1:Desk study of area: Orientation of the possible highway locations from maps aerial photos, etc Data types: engineering Environmental data Social data Economic data Results: a serious of locations for further study Step2: Reconnaissance survey from aerial photo Amplify and verify conditions for the locations selected from step1 Given control points, airplanes may fly the areas for aerial photos. The flying coverage: 0.4-0.6 the distance between control points. Results: base maps
