Unformatted text preview: Stephen Wilson (SID: 18974524) GSI: Timothy Fei Experiment #3 March 10 th , 2008 Chem 3AL Section 111 Mixed Melting Points Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to use pre-collected information of melting points to identify compounds and to see the effect that mixing compounds has on the melting point of the compounds. Methods: We were each given a vial of an unknown compound and were to find out the melting range of it by the use of a Mel-Temp 3.0. To do this we put approximately 2 mm into a capillary tube and then heated it quickly (6/minute) in the Mel-Temp to get an approximate melting point. Then we used a second capillary tube to get a more exact melting range by heating it up more slowly (2/minute). The melting range was observed to be from the first drop of liquid to the melting of the last piece of solid. After we found our melting range we wrote it on the board and waited for someone else to have a similar range. When we found someone with a similar range, the two of us made a mixed compound and melted it in the same way as before. We were to continue this until we found a person with the same compound as us and a...
