Stephen Wilson GSI: Timothy Fei Experiment #5 March 31 st , 2008 Chem 3AL Section 111 Partners: Anouck Champsaur, Vahid Hamzeheinejad, and Gary Lam Recrystallization and Melting Points Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to learn how to choose a good solvent by finding a solvent to use to recrystallize an unknown sample and identify it, and to learn how to remove impurities from brown sugar using activated charcoal. Methods: Each group was given 500 mg of an unknown solid to find the identity of. Each member of the group took 80-100 mg of the unknown to experiment with to try and find the best solvent to use to recrystallize it. The possible solvents were 95% ethanol, reagent grade acetone, hexane, or water, we also tested solubility in diethyl ether to help indentify it later. We tested each solvent by seeing if the unknown would not dissolve at room temperature, if it would dissolve with heating, and if it would recrystallize after it was cooled. We then decided on a solvent to use
