Stephen Wilson GSI: Timothy Fei Experiment #6 April 14 th , 2008 Chem 3AL Section 111 Partners: Anouck Champsaur, Vahid Hamzeheinejad, and Gary Lam Thin Layer Chromatography Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to use TLC to find differences in common over-the-counter pain-killers, and then to use this information to find the identity of an unknown pain killer. Methods: Each was to find the TLC behavior of the four OTC pain killers, with each student using a different solvent. The TLC plates were dotted with each pain killer and saturated in each solvent, 100% ethyl acetate, 92:8 ethyl acetate: acetic acid, 60:40 hexane: ethyl acetate, 10:10:1 toluene: ethyl acetate: acetic acid, respectively. Then the plates were put under a UV light to see how much the pain killers moved in each respective solvent. The plates were finally treated with iodine to see if the pain killer and solvent reacted to it. The groups then decided on the two best solvent to use to identify the unknown. In part two, each group was given an unknown pain killer that had been crushed. The
