Stephen Wilson GSI: Timothy Fei Experiment #7 April 21 st , 2008 Chem 3AL Section 111 Partners: Anouck Champsaur, Vahid Hamzeheinejad, and Gary Lam Identification of an Adulterated Herb or Spice by Thin Layer Chromatography Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to identify what compounds were adulterating our herb or spice by utilizing TLC. Methods: Each group started out by preparing their four herb/spice samples for analysis by combining half of the vials with 1.5 mL of hexane. Each member of the group then analyzed the TLC behavior of each of seven known compounds on two TLC plates, doing so with their own solvent system/visualization method. For the third plate, each student developed the three lower- numbered hexane samples of the herbs/spices on a TLC plate using their specific solvent system/ visualization method. We put the results from this test on the board and then tried to conclude with of the seven known compounds were in each of the three herbs/spices. The fourth plate consisted of all four herbs/spices getting developed, and then we tried to conclude which of the
