GSI: Timothy Fei Experiment #8 April 27 th , 2008 Chem 3AL Section 111 Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions of Alkyl Halides Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to see S N 1 and S N 2 reactions take place in the real world. Methods: For part 1: Each group labeled eleven reactions tubes with the identity of each alkyl halide substrate. 1 mL of 18% sodium iodide solution was added to each tube along with four drops of each respective halide and mixed until homogeneous. The tube was watched for a minimum of five minutes to observe whether a precipitate was formed or not, if not heat was applied for 5-6 minutes to try to get a precipitate again. For the two solid halides, 1-bromoadamantane and 1- chloroadamantane, 50 mg of the halide was dissolved in 0.5 mL of acetone before the 18% sodium iodide was added. For part 2: Part 1 was repeated with 1% ethanolic silver nitrate substituted for the 18% sodium iodide. Discussion:
