P: Porifera - sponges P: Cnidaria Classification 3 Body Types: 2 Body Types: sessile polyp & free- swimming medusa. Asconoid = small, choanocytes line spongocoel. C: Hydrozoa (hydras) - polyp dominant, colonial (colony) – show polymorphism in zooids. Medusa has a velum – on side w/ tentacles all together. Hydra atypical – no medusa, fresh water, single (no colony), asexual buds. Syconoid = small w/ radial canals, choanocytes line radial canals. C: Scyphozoa (jellyfishes) – true jellyfish, no velum, medusa dominant w/ reduced polyp stage. Leuconoid = big w/ complex radial canals, choanocytes line flagellated chambers. C: Anthozoa (sea anemones, corals, sea pansies) – polyp only, all marine, individuals or colonial Organization Cellular level Tissue layer ; Diploblastic– 2 tissue layers. Epidermis= outer layer Gastrodermis= inner layer, fx to secrete chemicals to help digest food. Embryonic
