Parenting styles2Present-day generations are giving more significance to parenting styles. There is clear researchthat parenting does influence children development. Parenting shapes who children become andaffect lifelong cognitive potential, social skill, behavioral- functioning and health by the qualityof parenting children receive determining their success on life. Research has identified fourparenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. Some of theseparenting styles involve positive outcomes and others lead children to be delinquents, alcohol,tobacco consumers and drug consumers in some cases having a negative outcome. Parenting styles3Parenting style and its effect on children development.Parenting is the way toward promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, financial,social and intellectual development of a child from earliest stages to adulthood. Parenting alludesto raising a child aside from a biological relationship. Good parenting is parenting that assistchildren with preparing for society creating not only a great citizen but also a great parent, greatspouse, and a great companion.Parents play a powerful role in molding and shaping the conduct of adolescents. (Coste,2015) recognizes the work of Baumrind, a clinical as well as developmental psychologist bestknown for her work on parenting styles.Baumrind identified three parenting styles based onparental demandingness and responsiveness, which included authoritative parenting,authoritarian parenting, and permissive parenting.Research discoveries propose that among all the patenting styles, authoritative parentingis the most effective one and accordingly, is a case of good parenting. It is associated withexpanded autonomy, self-confidence, self-efficacy, equipped social abilities, critical thinkingskills, effective emotion regulation and increased academic competence. Good or bad parentingstyle, thus, is determined by the psychosocial consequences it leads to.(Shamita and Rabeya2016)Parenting stylesDiana Baumrind is widely broadly viewed as the pioneer of presenting parental style andcontrol – authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. Diana Baumrind during the early 1960s,directed an investigation on children studying in preschool using parental interviews, naturalisticperception, and other research techniques. As a result, Baumrind recognized four basiccomponents of parenting including expectations of adulthood and control, communication styles,nurturance and warmth and disciplinary procedures.
