TUT15TA: Syed Faateh Ali1.The universality of utilitarianism means that the happiness “is not theagent’s own happiness, but that of all concerned”. The impartiality of utilitarianismmeans that wecan not count our own happiness more or less importantthan others. The two features are of The Greatest Happiness Principlewhich requires us to calculate our own happiness and the people ourbehaviors concerned in the same way.For example, I have two cups of milk, and if I give one of them to myfriend, our total happiness will be greater than that of drinking two cupsmyself. However, I drink both cups of milk and take my own happinessmore valuable than my friend’s. That is a partial behavior. If I pour the
milk on the floor carelessly, and decide not to clean it regardless of myroommates’ happiness, that’s not in accordance with universality.2.According to utilitarianism, we should satisfy the potential caviar-eater.If we give healthy meals to 10 starving people, we produce only10 Hedons.Instead, if we provide caviar to that individual, the quantityof happiness comes to 100.
