I) Purpose : The purpose of this lab experiment is to isolate each component of a mixture and to determine the percent by mass of each present. II) Procedure : Casey, J. and R. Tatz (2008). Measurements of Mass and Volume; Density. General Chemistry Laboratory Experiments , Hayden McNeil. Vol.1: 11-20. III) Data: (See attached Report Form) IV) Calculations : Percent composition of organic solid “X” = × % Percent component Mass of componentTotal Mass of sample 100 = . . × % Percent Composition 0 1725g0 5209g 100 = . × % Percent composition 0 3312 100 = . % Percent Composition 33 12 V) Error Analysis/Conclusion : There were several possible sources for error in the procedure of this experiment. In Part B of the experiment, the organic component may not have been completely separated from the mixture, and as a result could cause the percent composition calculations to be inaccurate.
