crucial phase as it would be difficult to extract the ‘right’ answer from the ‘wrong’
problem. Therefore, the first order of business is to study the relevant system and
develop a well-defined statement of the problem to be considered. This includes
determining such things as the appropriate objectives, con straints on what can be
done, interrelationships between the area to be studied and other areas of the
organization, possible alternative courses of action, time limits for deciding, and so on.
(b.) Formulating a mathematical model - This second phase is an important step since
modeling is a distinguishing feature of all operations research initiatives. Here is to
reformulate the problem identified in a mathematical model that represents the
essence of the problem. Types of models that can be used are iconic models, analog
models, and mathematical models.
(c.) Deriving solutions from the model - This phase is to create a process for deriving
solutions to the problem. Its general theme is to all about the pursuit of the optimal or
best solution, specifically a solution that saves cost and time while maximizing profits.
