1. What was The Society for Jewish Folk Music? When and where was it founded? What were its goals? What did it accomplish? Why was it disbanded? The Society for Jewish Folk Music was a chartered organization whose goal was to cooperate in the learning and development of Jewish folk music (synagogal and secular) through collecting examples of folk creations, reworking them artistically and disseminating them among the Society, also to support Jewish composers and other musicians. It was founded in 1908 in St. Petersburg. Through the efforts of dedicated workers, Jewish musical works were collected, making it possible to study them for the first time. By studying their folk music, Jewish composers found ways to embody inherited musical material in modern musical forms. In the 1920s, the culture and educational of the Stalinist regime became blatantly anti-Semitic. Jewish nationalist music was censored. By the end of the decade, nearly all Jewish cultural institutions were closed, and their leaders were persecuted, tortured and murdered.
