Why Does Marriage Research Matter? More than 60% of first marriages in the United States end in divorce or separation. Marriage research can help us to understand and improve marital dynamics. Seeks to identify qualities which may predict the success/failure of a marriage. (i.e. divorce, marital satisfaction, separation)

Significance of Neuroticism Neuroticism: personality characteristic: overall negative emotional attitude--reduced positive attitude. Past Research: High levels of neuroticism in a partner shown to be highly related to lowered marital quality. (lower marital satisfaction has been reported by married couples in which one or both of the partners is measured to be neurotic) Research also shown that neuroticism is a personality characteristic highly related to marital decline.
