Q) Discuss the importance of contemporary leadership theories based on real life examples Leader is a person who guides others towards a common goal, showing the way by example, and creating an environment in which other team members feel actively involved in the entire process (Youth Venture, 2007). The leader is somewhat different to the concept of boss. Boss is a person who has superior power over the corporate and the person who makes decision of the corporate’s vision and goals. However, leader focuses on directing the employees to carry out their work towards to accomplishment of the corporate’s vision. Then what is the leadership? Leadership is a process of whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to a common goal (Northouses’s, 2007, p3). The importance and the types of the leaderships have been studies for long period of time. The leadership theories divide into three big categories which are early leadership theories, contingency theories of leadership, and contemporary view of leadership. In this essay I’ll be focusing on how contemporary leadership influences and motivates the followers of the corporates and how it leads to the organizational goals. Then what is contemporary leadership? Contemporary leadership theories are the latest view about the role of leadership in the organization. The society these days are changing every second. increased in the fastest pace starting from the beginning of the 20 th century, and the way of living for human is changing in the fastest pace. As these changes are occurring in fast pace, the behavior of human’s action and the way of thinking is also changing in high speed. So, previous way of controlling and commanding leadership style does not work on the current environment. Contemporary leadership theories illustrate the most popular and effective ways of leading the followers in order to achieve the corporate’s ultimate goals in the view of current society. In the contemporary leadership theory also divides into 4 different leadership styles of leaders which are leader-member exchange theory, transformation leadership theory, charismatic-visionary leadership, and team leadership. In the body paragraph I will illustrate leader member exchange theory and transformational leadership theory with the successful examples of the leaders who adopted these theories to achieve the corporate’s goal to support and illustrate how contemporary leadership theories influences and motivate followers to achieve organizational goals. Or, in this essay I’ll use the experiment that is carried out using these theories to support the theory. First, leader-member exchange theory. Leader-member exchange theory is set by the relationship depth between the leader and the followers. For example, let’s assume that there is a teacher in a class and 40 students in the classroom. Even though the teacher can identify all the students in the classroom, but the teachers doesn’t normally treat all the students into same manner. If the relationship between the teacher and a 2
