Study Tips In addition to the “obvious” things that you need to do in order to be successful in my class (attend lecture, do your homework, attend office hours and/or go to the tutorial center), I thought that I would jot down some ideas that might help you to become a more efficient student in general. These tips are not just applicable to math class; you can use them to learn any skill. Tip #1 Big Picture vs. Little Picture. Too many times I see students getting lost in the details. While the details are super important, do you have a sense of what the bigger concepts are? If you don’t, then when you’re given even a slightly different problem, it will feel like it’s something that was like nothing presented in class. My first tip, then, is to go through your lecture notes and at the end of each lecture, save space for one or two sentences which can sum up what was talked about in that lecture. You’ll be shocked at just how little you actually learn. Tip #2 Review…review…review… Once facts and concepts live in your long term memory, ideas begin to connect by themselves. I would suggest spending a few minutes (and I do mean just a few minutes)
