PAM 210 Spring 2008 Professor Owens Problem Set 3 The Suggested Solutions 1) relationship of crime/ violence concern between students with college plan and without 60 65 70 75 80 85 90 95 60 65 70 75 80 85 90 95 100 crime/violence concern for students with college plan crime/violence concern for students w/o college plan There is a positive relationship between the percentage of students with and without college plans that are concerned about crime and violence each year. From year 1991 to 2003, crime and violence concern for students with college plans is positively associated with concerns for students without college plans. The strength of the correlation seems very strong, because the points are very close to each other and the points of the scatter plot show a very clear straight line pattern. 2) a) The mean percent in college plans group: (89.9+93.1+….+76.9+71.8)/13 = 86.85 The mean percent in no college plans group: (83.9+87.7…. .+69+59.5)/13 = 79.33 b) The standard deviation in college plans group: [(89.9-86.85)^2+(93.1-86.85)^2+….+(76.9-86.85)^2+(71.8-86.85)^2]/12 = 6.69 The standard deviation in no college plans group: [(83.9-79.33)^2+(87.7-79.33)^2+….+(69-79.33)^2+(59.5-79.33)^2]/12 = 8.70
