Chemistry 207 Fall Semester Lecture Notes Tuesday 28 August Daltons Theory of the Atom Designed to explain two observations: 1. mass is conserved in chem. . process(LaVoisier) 2. compounds yield fixed ratios of elements by mass. Ex. Water mass H divided by mass of oxygen equals I/8 Dalton 1. Each elements is composed of a unique type of atom. 2. Mass is the key property that makes one atom different from another 3. When elements come together to make compounds the elements always come together in simple whole number ratios. Ex. 1:1 2:1 2:3 What is inside an atom? Atomic Structure Electric forces - q q<0 >0 =0 - Coulambs Law the force one nearby particle exerts on another is (q1 q2)/ distance^2 Magnetic forces - force created by a magnet on a moving charge is perpendicular to the direction of motion fig 2.5 important experiments that helped determine the structure of an atom: 1) thomson’s experiment expt a. cathode rays aka electrons b. allows him to see that electrons have negative charge
