What are the functions of these hormones? o The kidneys release erythropoietin o Erythropoietin helps control the rate of red blood cell formation 1.Where are the components of the urinary system located (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra)? What is meant by retroperitoneal? What is the general function of each of these structures? o The components are located retroperitoneal Kidneys: abdominal cavity Ureters: abdominal pelvic cavity Bladder: pelvic cavity Urethra: pelvic cavity o Retroperitoneal means located behind the peritoneum 1.Understand that gross anatomy of the kidney. What structures are found I the renal medulla? What are the renal columns? o Renal corpuscles and proximal convoluted tubules are found in the renal cortex o Renal pyramids are found in the renal medulla o Renal columns are part of the renal cortex that extend down into the medulla 1.Renal columns are found between which structures? o Renal columns are found between renal pyramids 1.What structure is found at the apex of the renal pyramid? What drains into the renal pyramid? o Renal papilla are found at the apex of the renal pyramid o Urine drains into the renal pyramid 1.Trace the flow of urine from the renal papilla to the bladder. o
