Personal Wellness Chapter 14 Prevention of Cancer Cancer is the Second Leading Cause of Death in the U.S. Cancer will strike three out of four families. 30% of U.S. citizens will develop some type of cancer in their lifetimes. Cancer is most common in older people. Cancer The uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. It is not a single disease , rather it is a collection of over 100 different but related diseases that can occur in almost every tissue and organ in the body. Skin cancers are more common than cancers of any other organ. Types of Cancer Skin cancers are more common than cancers of any other organ. Breast Cancer Testicular Cancer Prostate Cancer A Group of Abnormal Cells is Called a Tumor Tumors can be benign or malignant Generally benign tumors are not serious health threats Malignant tumors are cancerous Cancer cells can undergo metastasis Causes of Cancer Cancer is caused by exposure to carcinogens Common carcinogens Radiation Chemicals

Tobacco Precancerous or Cancerous Cells: Most Adults Most adults have precancerous or cancerous cells in their bodies Can number in the millions by middle age The immune system and blood turbulence destroy most of them A precancerous cell may elude the defenses, multiplies itself, and obstructs normal tissue Carcinoma When a tumor reaches about 1 million cells, it is called a carcinoma in situ May stay about this size and encapsulated for months or years Does not pose a health threat in this form Called a benign noncancerous tumor Requires more oxygen and nutrients to grow Eventually, it my produce chemicals that enhance angiogenesis (capillary formation into the tumor) Angiogenesis is the precursor of metastasis
