1. A. Application of Value Stream Mapping: Peoria hospital in Illinois consists of several different departments such as Check-in, Surgery area, recovery area, sterilization and stocking. The sterilization and stocking department controls the inventory and cleaning department is responsible for hygiene of the items in inventory cycle. With “Patient protection and Affordable Care Act, March 23, 2010”, hospitals have to provide care for people and equally and affordably even there is excess inflow of patients. So, Peoria hospital has no income to buy new inventory, so they decided to use lean principles to manage inventory. Currently the cleaning sub-department is facing more problems because of irregular cycle times. Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen and Poka-Yoke lean tools were used to coordinate different cycle times in Sterilization department of Peoria hospital. At first the team began drawing Current value stream map. To do this a team of six members was formed involving one of the in-charge of sterilization section, others were students. The in-charge explained the team about sterilization and the flow of sterilizing a trey in that department. Team is also given training on lean principles. With this knowledge the team began to collect the detailed process of sterilizing a trey in Peoria hospital from ground level. To accomplish this they needed communication information in between departments in Peoria hospital and also the time factor to know the process time and lead time. This information was provided by the operators. So, as the team has information about lead time, total process time, number of operators, inventory and entire process of cleaning a trey, they draw a current value stream map. By using this map and available data, team started future value stream mapping. The operation room is considered as the customer who requires treys with in short time. So Takt time is calculated to measure at what frequency of time interval the trey is demanded. The result is 4.76
