03/11/08 Dr. Kevin Dann HIS132 Robert Marks, author of The Origins of the Modern World , and Dr. Dann’s approach to history use different tactics to explain the same thing. By taking in points from both Dr. Dann and Marks, I was able to get a well-rounded, complete view of history. While Dr. Dann tended to look at things from a spiritual perspective, Robert Marks preferred simple facts and things that could be physically seen. Dr. Dann’s approach to history focused on things that “spirit”. This is in contrast to things that “matter”, meaning that they affect things in the physical world. When Dr. Dann says “It Spirits!” he means that it affects the soul and has intangible consequences. Matters of the spirit are extremely important when studying history as every culture up until what we would consider contemporary society has taken spiritual matters very importantly and were influenced in their everyday lives by spirituality. We would never be able to understand the context that historical events occurred in if we did not take into account the spiritual issues of the time.
