Questions to ConsiderWhy is it important to take good lecture notes? What should I do before class, during class, and after class to take good notes? How can I match my note taking to the tasksof the class? How can I use my notes to self-test?
Good Lecture NotesBecause a large percentage of information will be conveyed to youthrough lectures in college, most professors expect you to takenotes in an organized fashion so that you can study and review.Note taking isn’t too difficult if you have a professor who speaksslowly, clearly and lectures in an organized fashion – but manyprofessors aren’t excellent lecturers. Therefore, college students should be able to supply their ownorganization, to get down the important points, and to fill in thegaps in their notes when necessary.
Good Lecture NotesGood lecture notes are important because:They serve as a record of what goes on in classeach day. When your notes are organized, they can help youto identify patterns in your professor’s lectures –and hence what information is most important! They help you to spot overlap between your textand the professor’s lecture.
Characteristics ofGood NotesOrganized.Strong notes use organizationalstrategies such as underlining main points, indentingdetails, noting examples, and numbering lists of ideas.Distinguish Main Points from Details. If theinformation in your notes runs together or you haveonly written down the main points and excluded thedetails, your notes will be less useful for studying.
Characteristics ofGood NotesAllow for Self-Testing.Most students merely “read over” their notes, whichoftengives them a false sense of knowing the information when infact they do not.Instead, try writing questions or key words, calledannotations, in the margin of your notes to help you testyourself.Stand the Test of Time. You should be able to readthrough your notes and annotations two days, twoweeks, or two months later and find they are stillunderstandable.
Characteristics ofGood NotesInclude Examples.Examples often show up on exams,so it’s important to write down any examples of a particularmain point that the professor provides.Good Notes Use Abbreviations.Because mostprofessors speak faster than you can write, it’s important touse abbreviations that make sense to you.Clearly Indicate Lecture Patterns. The two mostcommon lecture patterns are thedeductivepattern and theinductivepattern.
Deductive vs.Inductive LecturesDeductive lecturesbegin with the generalization ordefinition and then fill in the reasons, details, andexamples.
