Durkheim Field of Sociology o What is the study of sociology? Does not know exactly know what it studies unlike political science Closest answer is the study of social facts o What is society? Starts off with what it is not Disputes view of philosophers, Rousseau, Hobbes, Locke o State of nature, primitive society Always in risk of losing life a property, threat of violence People enter social contracts, give up certain rights to gain (peacefulness???) Durkheim says there is no Monstrous machine (referring to government) that keeps people together Durkheim says we have a misconception of sociology Interactions between people is a falsehood It is not about individuals Society is a collective organization that is greater than the simple grouping of individuals o What is a social fact? Social fact is a thing One cannot willfully change it Social things are as real as external physical things in the world
