During the 1 st Aliyah (1880’s), Jewish settlers lawfully and openly bough land from absentte landlords. The numbers given by Arab countries stating the number of Arabs displaced includes landlords living in other countries. Land Purchase records indicated owners lived in Bierut or Damascus andf some were tax collectors and merchants living elsewhere. Real estate speculators with no connection to the land Often exploited local workers Most of the time this land was nonarable. Only several thousand families were displaced following land purchases by Jewish settlers between 1880’s and 1930’s. This is a fraction of the number of people displaced by the Egyptian construction of the Aswan Dam, the Iraqi displacement of the Marsh Arabs, and other forced movements by Arab governments of fellow Arabs.
