BUSI610 Literature Review 2 Abstract Globalized organizations seem to make the business world smaller with the increase of interconnections. Today the success of an organization falls on whether they can do business anywhere in the world bridging the gap of time and culture. Organizations require to be flexible, have a quick turnaround on production and problem resolution as well adaptation to a global working environment. Research on leadership development continues to grow since the introduction of Kerr and Jermier (1978), substitute leadership model. This topic has a high interest in managers across different areas of business. This literature review will focus on the topic of leadership and management and how it relates to organizational structure, highlighting the areas of remote leadership, communication and impact of leadership and the effectiveness of leadership. The purpose of this review is to find information on management and leadership styles covering different leadership styles and how they differentiate from one another. In addition this review will look at how leadership relates to organizational structure and design. Key words: Leadership, Management, Organizational design and structure

BUSI610 Literature Review 3 Introduction Organizations are constantly changing due to the continued changing demand and increase in technology and customer expectations. Globalization has paved the way to more opened communication through social connections and collaborative technologies creating a support to globalization growth. Transformation in the elements of organizational structure and design includes innovation, technology, life-cycle process and inter-organizational relationship to name a few. With the complexity of global business, new technologies of collaboration are emerging to help manage the complexity of the organization structure, where success is dependent on the advantages of collaboration. The development of leaders are depends on collaboration that will help them grow in their knowledge of cultural intelligence and help the internal teams in a global environment. The growth of innovative tools has helped global teams communicate and has paved the way to the simplification of redundant processes. With the increase of social tools team members around the globe can communicate through several different tools and applications. The reality of today’s world has led many organizations to establish global teams (Daft, 1999, pg. 289). Global teams bring new challenges to the concept of teamwork as leaders of global teams have to coordinate across time, distance, and culture and in some cases lead team members that speak a different language (pg. 289). Leaders are responding to diversity with new perspectives knowing that there is a need for diversity in organizations. People feel valued in what they can bring to the organization which leads to higher morale (pg. 304).
