Jewish Music Midterm Two March 13, 2007 Secular Music 13 th  century- Jewish Minstrels (minnesingers- singers of love) in Christian courts in  Germany and France o Suskind von Trimberg     : Germany, sad life, wore Jewish clothes, went back to  Jewish community where he was ostracized, sang a dialect of German Yiddish different dialects in different towns 14 th  Century o Yiddish epic poems- Jewish minstrels sang them to Jewish audiences, sung at  joyous occasions, texts survived 15 th  Century o collection of songs from the German court. One survived from Lochaimer called  Liederbuch, had Hebrew letters (Yiddish) in the margin from Jewish minstrel. The Revival of Yiddish- 19 th  century o Before the revival Language spoken by millions of Jews Language of the people- no grammar, considered ‘vulgar’ and low class Language without literature o In the 19 th  century, writers who want to develop Yiddish and increase its status o 20 th  century- status increased (good literature and music), but two major blows: Holocaust Revival of Hebrew as a spoken language (Hebrew considered modern) Yiddish songs o Folk music, passed down in the family

o Part of the every day life, sung by ordinary people o 1900: Jewish ethnographers documented and collected these songs, and for the  musical component turned to Rimsky Korsakov - St. Petersberg, teacher at the  conservatory, he encouraged Jews to collect their songs, Engel  helped document  the songs with the ethnographers, wrote down music in vilna o 1990: recordings available to west o songs dealt with every day life lubllabies cheder- school songs working songs individuals in the community (rebbe) art songs: 19 th -20 th  centuries, some become folk songs
