1 IntroductionThis lab report discussed the relationship between average velocity (vavg) and instantaneousvelocity (vins) by analyzing the distances between each spots on the sprak-tape, and how theposition, velocity and acceleration change respect to time. The sparks leave black dots on thetape at constant time interval, 0.05s, so by measuring the distance between each spots, the graphbetween position and time can be found. For velocity and acceleration, there are three importantequations. vavg=∆ x∆t, where vavgis the average velocity (cm/s), ∆ xis change inposition (cm), and ∆tis time interval (s).vins=lim∆t →0∆ x∆t, where vinsis instantaneousvelocity (cm/s). Considering that in the experiment, ∆t= 0.1s is really close to 0, the vinsof nthpoint could be calculate as xn+1xn1∆t.a=lim∆t→0∆v∆t=dvdt, where a is the acceleration(cm/s2), ∆ vis change in velocity (cm/s). From these equations, correspondent graph could befound and the relationships between these variables could be investigated.2 Experimental MethodThere are six steps in the experiment. First of all, the equipment should be set up as Figure 1.Shows. The needles need to be perpendicular to the spark tape; also, they should be very close tobut not touch the tape. Next, the air ought to be release before the experiment begins. Then, themeter stick is used to control the glider, the moving block on the air track with needles on it,because of the high voltage is generated when producing the sparks. While the meter stick isremoved, the run button should be pressed to starting producing sparks, and at mean time theglider will move forward because of the gravity force exerts on the mass that is connected withthe glider by a string.
