After Lionel had been caught cheating on her adoptive mother, Brenda, Nicole Richie began to lead a secret life. She was 13 years old when she began drinking alcohol and taking drugs. Her four-year addiction began to spiral out of control, as she began taking pills and abusing heroin. Megan: Tell us Nicole, in your own opinion, how did it all start? Was it really started by your parent’s divorce, and how do you think your dad’s seldom appearance in your life impacted your initial appeal to the drug world? Nicole: Well, it was probably a combination of a lot of things; I think it had a lot to do with my personality and the fact that I just wanting to be free. My parents were going through a lot at the time, and I guess I just took advantage of it. Their way of making me happy was saying yes to everything I wanted.
