Temple of Ramses II - Abu Simbel, Upper Egypt, c.1290-1224BC. - new kingdom pharaoh - mortuary temple - located on the west bank of the nile - 65 foot tall (larger than a 6 story building) statues sitting - ruled for 75 years - aka ramses the great - ramses is the pharaoh that isrealites escaped under - king immortalized in ozzymandius - built to honor pharaoh and honor his power - reminder to the Neubians not to mess with them - 4 seated statues of ramses 2 outside, in the middle is the sun god (scale is used to show power) - alignment is so that 2 times a year the sun comes in and lights up images of ramses and the gods Interior of the Temple of Ramses – Abu Simbel, Upper Egypt. - interior: sun shines through hallway 2 times a year - 2 rows of 32 ft tall statues of ramses 2 as osirus (taller than a 3 story building) - not 3 dimentional statues in the hallway, do not bear any weight, decorative - atlantid- pillar in the shape of a man - caryatid- pillar in the shape of a woman - monument was cut apart piece by piece and moved in 1968 (National Geographic) Last Judgment of Hu-Nefer - Thebes, New Kingdom, c. 1290BC. - painted papyrus scroll - gives info associated with the book of the dead - recorded in various papyrus scrolls including the book of the dead - collection of poems, incantations, and chants - Egyptians call it the book of the coming forth for the day instead of the book of
