Chapter 26: War in Europe 26/07/2007 08:59:00 How do the events of World War II unfold?     September 1938—Munich Conference French and British leaders have met with Hitler Germany can have Sudetenland No more territorial expansion allowed March 1939—Germany marched to Sudetenland Annexed  all  of Czechoslovakia August 1939—Germany signed agreement with Russia over Poland and Baltic  states France and Britain pledge to assist Poland September 1, 1939—     Hitler invaded Poland September 3, 1939—Britain nd France declare war on Germany, but were not  able to mobilize and defend Poland. Winter of 1939/40== Sitting War—a temporary lull in fighting ( sitzkrieg ) April 1940---  blitzkrieg---  lightning war

Germany’s massive war effort against: Denmark Norway Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands France Used tanks, motorized infantry and artillery, air support, and a well-trained  military British and French were shocked! May 1940—British troops were barely able to evacuate Dunkirk before it fell to  Germany June 1940--- France Falls! Germans set up a puppet government in Vichy June 1940—Italians declare war of Allies Hitler now controls all of Western Europe!  What is America’s response/involvement?     America’s policy of isolationism soon turned to interventionism as it became clear  that Britain could not defeat Germany without help.
