4/25/07 Reconstruction Definition: Process that country went through to get the South involved in the government again - war ended 4/9/1865 - Lincon died 4/15/1865 -$20,000 taxable property (Andrew Johnson) - Vice President Andrew Johnson becomes president (only president that voted against TN joining confederacy after war) (wanted to punish confederate leaders, which repubublicans liked) -freedman’s bureau (created by Rebublicans up North and had agencies scattered throughout south finding people jobs, food, housing) instrumental in working out contracts between freedmen and owners--- owners had no idea how to work the land -south very poor for a very long time (not part of the industreal revolution (1890’s) -Radical Republicans (wanted strong representation) -1866 Polaski, TN KKK forms (and other rifle clubs) -ended w/ Compromise of 1877 Under union influence: (toward the end of the war) - LA - AR - TN Lincon said: - over age 21 sign a document - 10% of white males - stating that they would support the gvt - couldn’t have held an office in the confederate government
