Sloan 1 Jasmin Sloan American Government Term Paper 4 April 2012 Unemployment in America The auto companies made SUVs, pick-up trucks, and Hummers because everybody wanted big vehicles to look rich. The energy crisis occur which made people cut back on spending. They started buying small economy cars due to gas prices. The big three automotive industries in the United States continued to make the big vehicles instead of the fuel economy cars which lead to their decline. The big three automobile industries in the United States needed financial help to survive. The big three auto industries asked the government for help to bail them out so they would not go bankrupt. The big three had to cut back on some employees dealerships and factories to save money causing many people jobless. In the 1960’s many blacks left the southern where jobs were available in the automotive industry. Detroit, Michigan was called “The Motor city,” due to the many automotive factories that, placed there business have and provided jobs for those that needed it. You did not have to have college education to work there. Many blacks worked in the automotive factories and it was considered the job of choice due to a steady good pay and excellent benefits. At this time, many automotive plants have closed on moved to other cities. Many car dealerships have been closed. Parts suppliers have closed on moved to other cities where the plants moved to. We are not considered the “Motor city” any more. Detroit is in financial crisis at this time due to many leaving the city due to city not available. Schools have been closed and consolidated due to not enough students. Unemployment is abundant Detroit causing people to
Sloan 2 leave and go back to the Southern states where jobs are now available. You see empty, abandon houses due to people not able to pay their mortgage. Homeless people are everywhere living in their cars due to no available funds to help them. Financial institutions have closed or have been brought out by other institutions. Detroit has empty, abandon buildings and houses everywhere due to financial crisis. Detroit and surrounding suburbs have closed down and lay off police and fire fighters. People came here for the jobs in the automobile factories but those jobs are not available like before. They proud to say I worked at Ford or Chrysler or GM. The cost of fuel contributed the downfall of our automobile industry. Prices kept going up and due to wars the fuels was not reading available as before which inflated prices. America’s “Big Three” automotive industries are General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. The energy crisis of 2003-2008 was caused by the inflation of gas prices during this era due to the wars and etc.
