LS 2 Phelan TA – Kyle Kern The Controversy of Animal Research The issue of the ethics of using animals in research has long been a controversial issue between scientists and those who believe that animal testing is wasteful and cruel. Though each side has a wide variety of arguments to support their position, neither side has sufficiently convinced the other side of its position. Because the animal ethics issue is unlikely to be solved in the near future, it is best to establish standards under which animal testing can continue that appeases both parties. Scientists argue that animal testing has played a huge role in the advancement of modern medical treatments. Cures and vaccines against multiple diseases that have plagued mankind for centuries including measles, mumps and tuberculosis are the direct result of animal testing. Modern techniques including harvesting insulin from bacteria cultures would never have been possible without the aid of animal testing.
