Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night is highly influenced by the structure of the poem. The form is called villanelle. Dylan Thomas succeeds in writing a more modern poem of strict and difficult form that even works against his language to covey the pain and emotion that he feels. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night is written in villanelle form. Villanelle is a very specific form that includes nineteen lines. These lines are divided into five three-line stanzas and a final sixth stanza that has four lines. Villanelles are required to have is a specific rhyme schemeand two lines that are refrains. Villanelles are also most of the time, written in Iambic pentameter.This makes villanelles almost mathematical. This is because villanelles were originally a French type of poetry. So, the language barrier changes poetry from a normally flowing and elegant form to a strict, difficult form of poetry that still seems to flow.
